Autumn is a busy time in many gardeners’ diaries, as well as preparing plants for Winter there is also pruning to be taken care of. Autumn is a popular time to prune for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Getting plants into shape for the winter months, just because it’s Winter doesn’t mean your garden shouldn’t look good, shaping shrubs and trees makes your garden look significantly tidier.
  • With the trees and shrubs in shape, a lot more light will get into your garden, which during the winter months when light is limited, is something your other plants will thank you for later.
  • Perhaps one of the main reasons is to improve plant health. removing damaged or broken branches and removing any diseases before they can spread allows your plants to come back stronger after Winter.
  • When it comes to trees, there is also a safety aspect to it, the last thing you want is to injure anyone walking through your garden when branches fall during strong winds or frost. Prior planning and taking those branches down before they can harm you will prevent this and any other damage they may cause. (Pruning of smaller trees is important but also the felling of larger branches is essential, if you do not have the knowledge or experience to maintain these trees yourself then it is recommended contact professionals)

Tools

What do you need?

What tools you need will completely depend on your garden, the size, and what plants you have in there as well as your skillset but here is a quick overview of the variety of tools that are available to make this process as efficient as possible.

Pruning shrubs:

Sheers

Sheers is an old classic and a lot of people won’t sway from them even if it takes them twice as long. If you have a smaller garden or do not have a lot of shrubs to prune then shears are ideal, they aren’t costly and they can last a long time with proper care. However, there is some skill required when it comes to shaping your shrubs with sheers, in this instance, practice makes perfect!

If you’re looking for a new pair of sheers, visit us in-store to view our range!

Hedge trimmer

If you have a lot of large shrubs in your garden or a large amount of space to cover then it can be beneficial both timewise and effort-wise to invest in a good hedge trimmer. If you’re into your gardening then Autumn won’t be the only time you use it, this allows you to cut faster and maintain consistency easier than with sheers. With the help of some tips, Shaping can also be easier with a hedge trimmer, but more practice is always better. If you’re worried about running costs, then a battery-operated hedge trimmer can be more beneficial as well as being more cost-effective to run, it is also quieter and produces no emissions, doing your part for the planet as well as your garden.

Learn more about our hedge trimmer range here.

Long-reach hedge trimmer

For those with high hedges, you can get a long-reach hedge trimmer or a pole extender if you’re someone with a multitool. This allows you to safely ensure that the top of your hedges is neat and that they receive the same TLC as the rest of your shrubs.

Learn more about our long-reach hedge trimmer range here.

Pruning trees

Clippers/sheers

For smaller trees, a pair of clippers or sheers will be able to handle some Autumn pruning with the addition of a bit of brute strength.

Looking for a new pair? Visit us in-store to browse our range.

Garden Pruner

For those that perhaps don’t have the brute strength, or have a larger garden to tackle then a handheld garden pruner can be the solution to a well-maintained garden with ease. What’s even better is these pruners are often battery powered, for example, this Stihl cordless handheld pruner.

Pole Pruner

If you have taller trees then aside from pulling up a ladder, it can be particularly difficult to get the higher branches, missing these branches can be more dangerous as if they do decide to fall they may inflict more damage. To prevent this, a long-reach pole pruner will enable you to reach those higher branches safely and with ease.

Browse our range of pole pruners here.

Larger branches

If the branches are particularly large, perhaps larger than your pruning devices can handle a chainsaw may be more appropriate, domestic saw will the trick unless its an extremely large branch. Unless you are knowledgeable about chainsaws or have experience with them, it’s not recommended to just get a chainsaw and do it yourself. If you are worried about a larger branch that may be broken, close to falling, or diseased and you don’t have the skill set for a chainsaw then it is recommended to contact a professional tree service.

Browse our range of chainsaws here.

Safety Equipment

While completing all of these jobs, safety equipment should be worn, it is recommended that gloves should be worn to prevent scratches but as well as this, particularly when pruning trees, eye safety equipment and a helmet should be worn to protect yourself from flying or falling debris.

Learn more about our PPE range in-store.

Pruning, How much do you cut?

How much you cut back on each plant or tree will be dependent on the type of tree it is, as well as what sort of state it is in. This a great article to read which goes through a few species of plants that could benefit from a prune and how much, on average to cut back. Read this article by Gardening etc.

Things to look out for.

Aside from the obvious safety tips of ensuring you are wearing appropriate safety equipment when using any high-powered machine, there are also a few other tips to look out for.

You must carry out checks on your trees and shrubs before pruning to ensure that there are no nests there. Even if the nests are empty at this time of year, some species tend to return to the same nest next year so it is best to avoid disturbing these.

For shrubs on the floor, this watch out for nature also extends to hedgehogs, just being aware of your surroundings when using power tools around animals’ potential homes is essential.

In terms of plant health, it is important to recognize that sometimes, pruning can allow the disease to enter through the cut, it is, therefore, important to be aware of the signs for different plant diseases and fungi so that you can treat any issues early. There are a lot of sites online dedicated to providing you with this sort of information, if you do notice changes in your plants and trees, similar to how you do when you have a cold, you can input their symptoms online to determine a cause and also a remedy.

It’s passed by quickly! Tomorrow marks the official beginning of Autumn. While It may not feel like it until later in the season, we thought we would encourage you to get a head start on the fall preparations by giving you an essential guide on what you need to prepare and what equipment will get you through this season.

For a full garden Calendar filled with all the essential tasks, you should be thinking about on a month-by-month basis, check out Husqvarna’s Garden Calendar.

Pruning

All plants and trees will be different and may require pruning in a different season, for more information regarding the species of trees you have and when the best time to prune them is, you can consult a handy guide such as this one from Birch Tree Care.

However, as a general rule of thumb, Autumn is a good time to prune to allow your trees and shrubs to grow back stronger after the winter and to avoid losing branches during the winter time. If you need more information on pruning, check out one of our earlier blog posts about why pruning is important.

So, what tools are going to help you in this?

For someone with a smaller garden, you might swear by a simple pair of sheers. If it works, it works. If you have a smaller garden and don’t want to invest in a large hedge trimmer or pole pruner but are finding it difficult to cut through thicker branches then you should consider a handheld pruner. These smaller devices are capable of pruning both trees and shrubs and even cutting up garden waste. An example is the Stihl GTA26 which is even battery operated for more simplicity.

If you do have a larger garden that you are frequently taking care of then a pole pruner or hedge trimmer may be more useful to you. It will turn what seems like a never-ending job into a simple and even enjoyable experience.

Browse our range of Hedge trimmers and Pole Pruners here.

Not looking to have your shed cluttered with an abundance of tools, or just don’t think it’s worth it to invest in three or four separate pieces of equipment when you maybe only prune once or twice a year?

Combi tools are designed for the casual user who wants a variety of tools in their arsenal without the need for a large amount of storage space or a variety of tools to maintain. These come with an engine that acts as the power source for all the different types of attachments you can think of.

For more information on these systems check out our previous blog all about combi systems, what they are called to different brands and what attachments are available.

Or Browse our range of Combi systems and attachments

Chainsaws

For those who want to get ahead of the game, ensure your chainsaw is prepared for the months ahead.

Your chainsaw is going to see the most use in the months of Autumn and Winter so you will need to get it prepared. If you’re not usually a regular user, then you may have had it in storage for a while, if this is the case there are some steps you will need to take to get it ready. Follow this guide from Stihl for how to prepare your saw for use.

Looking for an upgrade? Browse our range of chainsaws.

Leaves

The staple of Autumn. Although we all love to walk through orange leaves and embrace the crunching sounds, once the rain hits and the leaves turn to soggy mush, we are over it.

Should you just leave your leaves? While they don’t sound like a big deal, leaving leaves on your lawn, particularly damp, can form a barrier between your lawn and its access to light and air which can lead to damage, and leaving them to clog up could also lead to poor drainage. To avoid having to work ten times harder to repair these issues in the spring the easier step is prevention. Raking or blowing leaves regularly as they fall will minimize the workload in the future.

For some, a rake is enough, particularly if you only have a small garden. However, if you have a larger garden with a lot of walkways, then going around it all with a rake can seem like a momentous task. Leaf blowers are therefore a useful tool to have in your arsenal.

There are different types, petrol, battery, professional and domestic. The most ideal leaf blower for you will depend on your preferences and your tasks, and how you will use it.

Browse our range here.

Lawn maintenance

Depending on where you live and the current weather indications you should keep an eye on when you will receive your first frost. Ideally, you want to do your final mow before then. However, with the way the current climate, this deadline may be more difficult to predict.

Mower blade

Now is a good time to raise it leaving your grass a little longer can encourage more root growth which will help the grass during the winter.

Aerate

If you’re looking after a larger piece of land, perhaps an estate then now is a good time to aerate your lawn. For the average home user this typically only needs to be done every two or three years. Aerating allows more movement and water in the rooted area which means your lawn will be stronger and in a better position to manage long periods of drought or waterlogging. The trick here is to focus on areas that receive the most wear, perhaps a place that holds a lot of activities or machinery as these are the areas that are likely to be the most compacted.

Looking for machinery to do this? Browse our Hires catalog

You may have heard the term multi-tool be thrown around in the gardening and ground care industry, they also go by different names if the brand has their own phrase, for example, Stihl has a Kombi tool system, Husqvarna calls them Combi trimmers and Honda go by Versa tools. It’s no wonder that if you’re not familiar with these types of systems then it can get confusing. So let’s discuss the pros, the cons, the different types, and the uses for these machines.

First off, what is a multi-tool system?

Multi-tools are what they sound like, multiple tools in one. Typically you can either buy the engine system which powers different attachments, you can then buy the different attachments you need, or some brands offer them in a kit with the engine and a few attachments together, the only thing with this is that you won’t get to choose the attachments, so you may have one you just don’t use.

What attachments are there?

There are a lot of attachments out there designed to cover every base you might need, there are strimmer heads, brush cutter heads, hedgers, pole saws, blowers, and more. There are also pole extenders that can be used for getting to those hard-to-reach places.

What are the benefits?

There are numerous benefits to multi-tool systems including:

  • Saving money, is one of the most common reasons people opt for a multi-tool. If you are into gardening instead of forking out on 5 different machines and paying to run and maintain all these machines, instead you can opt for one machine.
  • Saves space. If you only have a small shed in your garden or don’t want to be tripping over an abundance of tools then storing various attachments which just pop off the engine is simpler and will save you a lot of room.
  • Saves you time. This benefit can be seen in various scenarios, from not having to fuel up, take out, and bring back various machines during the gardening process, to maintenance. If you have multiple machines they may need servicing or repairs at various times, leading you to be in and out of your local workshop like a revolving door, it would be much simpler just to have to work about the maintenance of one engine.
  • Flexibility, this includes being able to change tools easily while doing the job as well as the range of tools. You can have a larger range of tools at a much lower cost, meaning you would more likely have a larger variety of tools and uses than if you were just to purchase the individual machine, for example, if you bought a hedger, you would then have to purchase an entirely different machine to get a pole hedger, which just may not be in your budget, however, if you have a pole extender, pretty much most attachments can be extended.
  • There are both petrol and battery options. Perhaps you have already begun your transition to cordless/battery operated and want to continue to purchase battery alternatives. Various brands offer battery-powered multi-tool engines, including Ego, Stihl, and Husqvarna.

What are the considerations?

There are some factors to consider before going out and getting yourself a multi-tool.

Firstly, most of these are designed for domestic users. The main benefits derived from these types of machines appeal to those who want to maintain their garden or land, not professionals working within demanding environments. Therefore, if you use these machines as such and put them through a heavy workload day in and day out their life will not be what you expected.

Another consideration is the brand you choose to go for. This is due to the attachments available from brand to brand, one may have more options than the other or just different ones so it’s worth having a browse before making a decision.

One thing to look out for is buying brands without a reputation for quality. Similar to a lot of tools, some people get tempted into buying cheaper alternatives off sites like eBay, amazon but instead of purchasing a well-known brand, they go for one they have never heard of and therefore don’t know what the measure of quality is is they will be receiving.

Unfortunately, the price of these machines often gets reflected in the quality and customers just don’t see a good lifespan for the machine or the attachments. Investing in a brand with a high-quality reputation as well as replacement parts easily accessible is the key to getting the most out of both your machine and money in the long run.

So, who do these types of machines appeal to?

Designed to give the domestic user the right tools for the right job this machine is aimed at anyone with a small, medium, or large garden who want to maintain it without the high cost and fuss of buying all the different machines you need.

It also allows you to obtain a higher quality finish because of trying to use your hedger to give your grass a strim or climbing up on a wobbly ladder to get to the top of your hedge, you have the right tools for the right job without the need for large storage space or to break the bank.

Which brands are there?

At Gammies, we stock four different brands of Multi-tools…

EGO

We stock the PH1400E multi-tool head, as well as the kit which contains a variety of attachments including a line trimmer, brush cutter blade, hedge trimmer, pole, saw, and edger attachments as well as a 5.0Ah Battery and rapid charger.

Honda

The Honda versa tool is built to last and is fueled by a petrol engine. They have two different engine heads and various attachments including Strimmer, Line trimmer, short hedger, long hedger, pruner, edger, blower, cultivator, and long and short extensions.

Husqvarna

Husqvarna offers a range of combi trimmers both petrol and cordless versions to suit different requirements. These powerful engines support a range of attachments including a strimmer, weed scissors, short and long hedger, pole saw, blower, tiller, edgers, sweepers, and a pole extension.

Stihl

Similarly, Stihl also has both petrol and cordless engines for their Kombi systems, and the powerful engines come with a range of attachments available including a bent shaft strimmer, brush cutter, edgers, long handle and long reach hedge trimmer, pole pruner, cultivator, blower, bristle brush, rotary cutting head, and pole extensions.

According to the Husqvarna Garden Calendar, August through to September is the ideal time to prune trees and bushes.

The main reason for this which is argued by most garden professionals is that pruning promotes growth, and you are then more likely to produce better fruit or flowers. But there are other reasons why pruning is important.

Why should you prune?

Growth- if you want your tree to grow to its healthy potential then pruning in moderation is the way to go. When you remove the branches which may not be doing so well the tree is then able to dedicate its resources to the healthier parts and push out regrowth. Moderation is the key term here, over-pruning can have opposing effects on the tree and you may end up with an even sparser tree.

Can trees get sick? Yes, they can. Diseases on trees can spread quickly and the most common treatment is pruning. Typically, fungi can affect a tree, and whilst it may not kill it, it will leave it looking worse for wear. Pruning the affected areas will prevent it from spreading and allow the tree to re-grow healthier branches in those areas.

Ever had branches fall in high winds or just drop all by themselves? Pruning dead or damaged branches ensures that the branches won’t fall on unsuspecting passersby during bad weather.

Unwanted growth can be removed. If you don’t like it or if it’s causing an issue you can just cut it off! Branches that are too close to your windows or powerlines or disrupting your view can be pruned. Will they grow back? Most likely but pruning them correctly won’t kill your tree.

Can pruning damage your tree?

Yes, pruning at the wrong time and over-pruning can cause damage to the tree. It is important to prune appropriately depending on the species of tree and if you are in doubt, leave it to a professional.

How do you know when is best to prune each tree? This guide from the Arboricultural Association is extremely useful in determining when is the best time to prune your tree based on the species in question and their tolerance to pruning.

What are the best tools for pruning?

So, what tools should you use? This will depend on the size of the tree you are pruning as well as what you, yourself are capable and comfortable with operating.

Typically if you’re looking to prune some tall but thinner branches then a pole pruner is the ideal tool for the task. These feature telescopic shafts which extend to a certain length and are best described as mini saws on the end of a pole. This allows you to reach high without having to climb and is generally the safer route.

An example of this is the Stihl HTA86 Cordless pole pruner which provides excellent cutting performance with the addition of being battery powered this leads to less noise, fewer vibrations, and fewer emissions. An all-around ideal tool for the domestic user.

Browse more from our range

If you are looking to prune low and reachable trees and shrubs then a handheld pruner may be more appropriate. Similar to the pole pruner this tool is a mini saw designed to be able to cut through small to medium-sized branches just handheld.

An example of this is the GTA26 cordless garden pruner. Powered via batteries it gives you the same power with the bonus of less noise, vibrations, and emissions.

Browse more from our cordless range

If the branches you are looking to trim are particularly large or perhaps you’re needing to get rid of a few trees altogether then a chainsaw would be more suitable. This option is recommended only for those who are capable and knowledgeable of how to use and handle a tool such as this.

We have a range of saws available such as ones suitable for around the garden maintenance to higher powered, professional standard saws. Both petrol-powered and battery-powered saws are available with a variety of bar lengths.

Whatever your garden goals are this Summer, there are a few essential pieces of equipment that any garden enthusiast should have at their disposal. Depending on where you live and the weather conditions different equipment may be more useful than others and all will take a bit of intuition to gain the best results.

If you live in Scotland, then you know that even in the summer the weather can be unpredictable and there are various changes from sunshine to high winds and heavy rain to deal with. This will alter how you approach your garden care in comparison to those who experience long, dry summers.

Mowing.

One of the most universal pieces of garden equipment most people have is a mower of some sort. Whether you are a hardcore gardening enthusiast or whether you have just been tasked with making sure your garden doesn’t turn into a jungle, most people with a garden owns a mower.

Something to note is that in the summer, grass grows faster. A natural reaction to this may be just to cut your grass shorter on the next mow but this can increase the risk of damage to the lawn and the occurrence of weeds. To some people’s dismay, the answer to keeping your lush, green grass healthy during the summer is to mow more frequently.

In the market for a new mower? Browse our range now

If this news makes your heart sink at the thought of more time spent mowing your lawn then you should consider investing in a Robotic Mower to free yourself of this task altogether. Read our blog on how Robotic mowers can make your life easier and Browse our range now!

As well as this, according to STIGA’s blog, you must wait until your grass is dry before you cut it, something those who live in areas with unpredictable weather should keep in their minds when performing garden maintenance even during the summer. There are a few reasons to avoid this, including

  • Depending on your mower, cutting wet grass can cause strain and damage to some mowers as well as clogging your mower deck.
  • The cut won’t be even, due to blades of grass bending when wet it can cause an uneven cut so after you struggle to cut it you aren’t even left with good results.
  • Risk of spreading fungal disease
  • Can cause damage to roots and cause ruts to form which impacts future lawn health, this is due to the weight of the mower, wheels, and even your shoes which can cause the soft soil to become compact.

Summer Pruning

If you’re someone who likes to take care of their garden then summer is the ideal time to go out and grow a new plants, maintain existing plants and create your ideal garden to spend evenings in and host events.

Summer is the ideal time for pruning, this is because the vegetative development is at its highest and allows for the plant to heal and regrow before the winter. As well as limiting growth so one plant doesn’t take up your whole garden, this process also refers to the removal of dead branches and generally tidying up your shrubbery or trees.

If you’re someone with a relatively small garden this can be a time-consuming and physically laborious task because you may not deem it worthwhile to invest in a hedge saw or pole pruner for a smaller area. However, a tool that is particularly useful for those with smaller gardens or a lot of smaller shrubs and trees to pruner is a cordless, handheld pruner.

If you have a larger garden with a lot of bushes, shrubs, and hedges then a hedge trimmer may be a worthwhile investment. Not only are these machines relatively small and take up little space in your storge but they are useful all year round. They also give you the ability to try your hand at wonderful hedge art and shapes which you see all over your social media.

Browse our range of hedge trimmers and pole pruners, including brands such as Stihl, Honda, and Husqvarna, Hedging skills are not included!

Cleaning

Because summer is the time of year when you spend the most time in your garden so most people start the summer by taking out all of their garden furniture and giving it a good wash. Why stop there? A pressure washer is both a car enthusiast’s ideal tool as well as a garden enthusiast. A quick and simple way to keep your garden tidy and clean. With numerous applications, a pressure washer can

  • Clean walls, windows, and fences
  • Clean slate, stone, and wooden patios and driveways.
  • Be used on cleaning cars, tractors, lawnmowers, and other equipment.

Browse our range of power/pressure washers now including the Stihl Range, with Stihl’s Pressure washer promotion currently on.

Enjoy your Garden!

After all that hard work, time and effort take the time to enjoy it. Show your garden off by hosting some events or get together and make the most of the nice weather and long nights while they last!
